M.A.S.O.C. Orienteering Weekend, French Creeg State Park, May 1-3
Scouts from units all over the PA and the neighboring states gathered for the annual Orienteering event. Many spent the weekend in the group campground, making new friends and having a lot of fun. Saturday morning, everyone arose early for a good breakfast, and then proceeded to check in. Time before the event was spent learning orienteering skills, and exploring the State Park.
Each team of Scouts was assigned by the Scoutmaster based on ability, rank, and ages. Teams of 2-3 Scouts were assigned their starting times, usually a few minutes apart, and had to find a number of orienteering markers marked on their map. Older scouts got harder (and longer) courses.
The afternoon event was designed to see how well your troop could work together. A map with all the markers was given to the SPL, who had to divide them up among the troop, and see which group could get the most in a given time period. Each marker had a point value based on difficulty.
Congratulations to Nic, Ethan, and Matt We. for taking 4th place in their division, out of over 40 teams. There were about 1,000 participants overall, and everyone had a good time, and did a great job!
