Bench Refinishing

At the intersection of Forest Avenue and Main Street in Shrewsbury Borough are four wood benches. The benches are place one on each corner in the heart of the Antique shops. The benches were first placed by the Shrewsbury Beatification Project. Troop 205 refinished the benches in June 2009 and with 5 years passing it was certainly time for to refinish the benches again.

The morning of June 21, several scouts from Troop 205 started this project by transporting the four benches from the center of Shrewsbury to the Brainard’s house.

On June 22 Steve, Ethan, and Nic started by repairing and rebuilding the benches. They then started sanding, and sanded some more. After a few hours they were joined by Caleb and Eric who brought renewed energy. By the end of the day, the majority of the sanding was completed, and Nic had perfected a gentle hand with the buffing wheel to remove nearly 10 years of corrosion from the brass plates from each of the four benches

On June 28 Ethan, Steve, Mike, Brandon, and Alex cranked up the detail sanders and completed preparing the benches for finishing. First Colin demonstrated how to use the paint sprayer, then everyone else took a turn testing their skills with a pneumatic paint sprayer… and several brushes were used to eliminate any excess runs, drips and errors. In the end all four benches had received two coats of redwood deck stain.

At noon on Sunday June 29 Steve and Ethan were joined by Eric, Caleb, Nic, and Carson; they applied two more coats of redwood stain and set the benches in the sun to dry. Later in the afternoon, Nic and Eric reinstalled the shiny brass nameplates. After the Troop family Cookout, Mike, Steve, Ethan, Caleb, and Matt returned the nearly new benches back to the center of town where they will serve the community for another five years.
